I've never been to Africa, nor did I ever expect that at 19 I would up and go with a girl I befriended only 2 months prior! And over Christmas, no less! This trip will also mark the first Christmas I spend outside my parent's house.
My flight leaves Seattle at 3:00pm on the 8th.
I arrive in Frankfurt, Germany at 10:10am on the 9th.
At 9:15pm I will arrive in Addis Abada, Ethiopia.
I will arrive in Kampala, Uganda by 1:15am, December 10.
At 24 hours total travel time, this trip will also top my previous travel time record by almost 10 hours!
Logistics aside, I couldn't be happier or more grateful for this opportunity! And at my luck for meeting Grace when I did- it's been one of the quickest and most entertaining friendships I have ever had the pleasure to make. The generosity of friends and family has left me with an entire duffel bag stuffed full of baby clothes (some hand-made!) for the children at Sanyu Babies Home, the orphanage Grace and I will be volunteering and staying at for the next three weeks. I don't have much more to say for now, except that for those concerned for and/or interested in checking in on me while I am abroad this holiday season, apparently I will have internet access at Sanyu Babies Home and I intend to check in via this blog frequently and accompanied by photos!
Cheers!
Gina
I know this is totally random, but I found your blog while doing a search for Sanyu. I know you're somewhere in the middle of the air or somewhere in Germany or something, but I was just wondering if you could do me a bit of a favor. I was in Uganda for 3 months at the beginning of this month and I fell in love with one of the little boys at Sanyu. I am trying very hard to get back to Uganda ASAP, and I'm hoping to foster (and later adopt) the little one that I fell in love with. Would you mind giving him some extra love from me & maybe even sending me a little update about how he's doing? It would mean the world to me. My email, if you are willing, is stephaniejfrey@gmail.com and my sweet boy at Sanyu is Raphael. He is almost 3 & in the older children's class. Thank you so, so much! I hope you love your time in Kampala. Let me know if you need/want any advice about things to do there in your off time. :)

Oh wow, hi Stephanie!
ReplyDeleteYes I will absolutely do that for you, and I wish you the best of luck both in making it back to Uganda and in reuniting with Raphael.
I will e-mail you more later, but my first shift here was with the older class and Rafael was actually the first one at Sanyu I held- he is healthy and happy and a very sweet child.
